Oiltanking Deutschland GmbH & Co. KG in Hamburg is a subsidiary of Oiltanking GmbH, Hamburg. The company is active globally one of the world’s leading independent storage partners for oils, chemicals and gases. The company has 13 locations throughout Germany. The smooth process of deliveries is now controlled by a card system from primion.
Oiltanking's business is the handling and storage of products. Oiltanking does not own the products; their customers do. Alongside the mineral oil companies who use Oiltanking to guarantee supplies to their fifi lling stations throughout Germany, the company also numbers amongst its customers, principally mid-size mineral oil dealers who are active in the enduser market for heating oil. Normally, the goods reach the tank farms by ocean-going vessel, by barge or by rail. Delivery of the product is normally done by tanker lorry but also by ship or by rail. Oiltanking itself does not operate the tanker lorries. The transport companies are contracted by Oiltanking’s customers. The hand-Oil depot Hamm of the products by Oiltanking is carried out under the strictest quality, environment and safety standards. This is guaranteed through their own in-house Quality and SafetyManagement system and also by customer audits and regular controls carried out by the relevant authorities.
Since the middle of 2005, under the auspices of legislation regarding the transportation of dangerous goods, Oiltanking is required to confifi rm the identity of all tanker lorry drivers before they leave the fifi lling station, having loaded up their vehicles. The work required for this identity check is too extensive to be done through manual checks at 6 of the company's 13 locations. For this reason, a card-based system from primion has been installed, in order to achieve and maintain a smooth and effifi cient process. Once the system has been fully rolled out, a total number of some 4,000 "driver cards" will have been issued. These are managed through a server located in the company’s HQ in Hamburg. Access to the data is possible through the company’s own Intranet from each of the remote locations. The advantage of this structure is that a driver who has received his card at location A can also use it at location B once it has leared and activated there. Furthermore, the system can be access through a simple Web Browser software from any workplace on the Intranet. This use of web technology further reduces the maintenance overheads at the individual workplaces within the tank farms. Each tank farm location has grown over the decades with the result that there are signififi cant differences between the various locations in terms of controlling ingress to and egress from the plant, the size of the facility, the frequency of tanker lorry visits, etc.
This is the reason why, for example, that at some locations barrier control is handled at some locations while at others, the issuing of delivery notes is only done once the identity of the driver has been established. The card design is done through the central server in Hamburg and forms the basis of the card creation on site at the oil depots. Each depot has been equipped with a card printer for this purpose. The drivers are photographed using a standard digital camera. The expansion of the system to include a time management system for the employees is not on the agenda just at the moment, but could be implemented with problem at any time.
